Greetz~

If you read this then you just wasted you're time.

Congratulations, you can write proper nouns. Are you ready to weave those into sentences with meaning or do you need more practice?

I'm just gonna speak what's been on my mind lately

This thread is a goddamn travesty. I'd love to discuss music, like how isaac brock can shout poetry and still melt my goddamn heart, but it'd be completely lost in people posting youtube links without context; a massive clamor of "LISTEN TO THIS HEY LISTEN TO THIS". Posters all shouting for attention, giving none.

Let's make a thread where we can talk about music. No linking to videos en masse (maybe grooveshark links), but just a place better suited for talking about why EVERY ARCADE FIRE ALBUM SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME, or HOW MARK EVERETT VOCALIZES THAT INNER LONELINESS WE ALL HAVE DEEP DOWN.

should I make said thread y/n

seriously though with the exception of the song Neon Bible, every arcade fire track is identical

There's no point if it stops being fun.

Everett's the frontman for Eels, an LA based band most known for hits such as "Novocaine for the Soul", "Last Stop: This Town" and "Things the Grandchildren Should Know".

I've been listening to the album Blinking Lights And Other Revelations. He's rather good at pulling the "melancholic lyrics masked by an upbeat tune" schtick with his singles, which keeps him in relevant as he continues to release albums.

Since you're obviously referring to me partially, let me just say that I let the music speak for itself. I'm simply just trying to spread some names and share some tunes. It's a thread about music, therefore I DON'T SEE WHY we can't have both non-contextual YT plugs (which MAY spark conversations with fellow/new listeners) and discuss things pertaining to artists/bands like how incredibly heartrending albums like 'Hospice' is.

I just get very eager with showing songs to friends, so I guess it's the same story on discussion boards too.

Smells like pup.
Twit @Czarsaturn

I wasn't thinking about you specifically, but upon scrolling up I guess I did implicate you. I wouldn't think this thread be shut down, as it's still a good place to paste music and get the word out, I was thinking of a discussion-only companion thread to this one.

Also, if you like hospice, have you listened to In The Attic of the Universe? I plug that album all the time but I have no one to discuss it with :(

(ps the antlers have a new album coming out in May and are performing it on NPR as a part of SXSW coverage)

YEAH, I've heard about their new album, I can't wait. My friend just recently showed them to me, so I haven't yet got a hold of TAotU. I can barely listen to Hospice without just being torn up, though. It's probably one of the saddest things I've ever listened to- in a good way though. It's a love story/tragedy that speaks volumes above most meaningless concept albums today with its raw emotion and emphasis on said story.

Smells like pup.
Twit @Czarsaturn

It's definitely a beautiful type sadness, but I really need to be in the proper mood to listen to it. Like, post-relationship-breakup I definitely had Bear, Thirteen, and Two on loop.

so are you here to spam us or are you here to ask us if we realize

that everyone

we know

someday

will die

but instead of saying all of our goodbyes, we should let them know we realize that life goes fast, it's hard to make the good things last, we realize the sun doesn't go down; it's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round.

Don't worry, folks. The spambot will be dealt with. (I don't think I actually have a banhammer, yet... Have to leave a note to the rest of the mod crew for him.)

Hell, I'm half tempted to erase evidence it ever existed...

Oldish news, but Mogwai's newest album is just obscenely terrific.

I love post-rock. I'm an unrationally proud national of Scotland.

Why does it bug me so much that I can't listen to one of the biggest bands ever to come from here, and they are supposedly just as good as every other band that I listen to and everyone always recommends them to me when I mention my favourite bands? It really does irritate me. :C

Huh... he did edit the links to go to Tomato's old site. Well, I didn't mouse over the links, I just wisked it out of the topic.

Anywho, back on the topic of music, I've been jamming to one particular track, Modest Mouse's The Ocean Breathes Salty due in part to the wildly catchy and enigmatic lyricisms of Isaac Brock.

"Well that is that and this is this, you tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get you get away from me. You get away from me."

"you missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye"

"for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath/ You wasted life why wouldn't you waste death"

What's your "monday jam" so to speak? This one's mine~

My monday jam:

i ain't even kidding. i'm not sure if i'm tearing up or it's just the allergies.

Rumors of my death are only slightly exaggerated.

So we were talking about The Antlers earlier, yes?

They're releasing a new album in May. It's called "Break Apart".

I gave Hospice a listen for the first time yesterday, and it has been on repeat ever since. So beautiful, tragic, wonderful.

Mott the Hoople, bro

Another new track from TV on the Radio's next album, Nine Types of Light.

On that note, their bassist, Gerard Smith, was diagnosed with Lung Cancer today (or at least told the media about it today, they just say he was diagnosed after they finished the new album.) So… that's depressing…

Earlier I mentioned the Eels, and IM mentioned he hadn't heard of them, so here's Mark Everett's (in my opinion) best track, Last Stop: This Town

this lo-fi rock song was composed by Everett in the wake of his mother's death due to cancer, and his sister's suicide. In this track, he's singing to his sister.

[MOD EDIT] Don't.

Not sure why, but I really love this song right now. Perfect slow-dance type music.

^Speaking of girly talk, has anyone seen this:

Apparently this became a meme overnight. It's a really stupid song by a tone-deaf singer that you can't get out of your head no matter how many times you try. And there's a rap about school buses near the end. No clue.

skyrunner, two things

1) Durp676 was mod edited when he linked that song

2) girl talk has literally nothing to do with girly talk. that's the joke

so would it be too much to ask that we don't enter Rebecca Black into the discussion? We get it, she's a 13 year old girl with incredibly wealthy parents that paid for this abomination to be made.

yeah, don't post memes and don't post videos just to complain about them. On that note, we're getting link-heavy again. While we all have music we want to share, let's make sure not to go overboard. There's a lot of discussion to be had.

Rumors of my death are only slightly exaggerated.

I've got a sweet discussion topic (that I'm surprised we've never covered)

CONCERTS.

I just got back from the sweetest Girl Talk concert, he had this ballin set with balloons and simon and garfunkel and ludacris and everything, man. I'm still a bit deaf from the show. I'm waiting for photos from the show to appear on the OC Weekly's website, there's bound to be some shots of amazingness

Also, has anyone here been to a Grateful Dead show? (Bob Weir and Ratdog counts, as does The Dead or Phil Lesh and Friends)

posted below is a picture of Girl Talk from tonight's show in Pomona

A usual bout of insomnia has kept me up this evening, however with some interesting perks. I didn't realize the Youtube Symphony had been playing in Sydney all week and because of my sleeping pattern, I'm currently watching their Finale live. This is an amazing orchestra in how well they play despite language barriers and practices not often done with everyone or even most. I am absolutely enjoying the music, and if classical is your thing, then I encourage y'all to check out their performances.

My girlfriend and I went to a Ra Ra Riot concert over spring break, and it turned her into an almost diehard fan. I play their stuff in the car a lot—we both have many years of experience with strings; I play the cello, she plays the viola—so I always figured it would be something she would like. And she did, she enjoyed them well enough when I would play an album. But seeing them live, she said, really made her "get it", which is an absolutely fair statement. To see them all up on stage, how well they perform together, how they all seem to really love what they do (except for the violinist, she seems a little distant), it was just a fantastic concert.

And it doesn't hurt their image that they are one of the only bands that can make an indie crowd actually dance. Let me tell you, I've seen other bands try, and it is not an easy task.

they call him…the universe crimbus

It depends on the venue too. A rockin' band in a small venue can easily get the crowd boppin'. Case in point being the Streetlight Manifesto concert I went to a few weeks back; they had the whole place jumpin': people crowdsurfin' everywhere, skanking in the pit, all of it!

Come to think of it, I can't imagine a ska band NOT being able to make the Ira Glasses generation dance.

(below: ira glasses worn by ira glass. ira is really funny-sounding if you say it a lot of times)

This is sadly true, Latios. My early concert experiences were mostly ska and punk, so I was dumbfounded that people can just sit and look at a band without getting involved in any way. The example I always remember is the first time I saw DeVotchKa, when they opened for Dresden Dolls. The music seemed to me to hit you in such a way that you can't not move to it, and yet everyone was just staring blankly. I was dissappoint

Other than genre, how active the crowd is also seems to vary from city to city, and the type of venue. Of course, a charismatic enough musician can get almost anyone moving. Eugene Hutz, of Gogol Bordello, is a great example. I once saw them playing with Skindred, and even though I was in a terrible mood when I got to the show, I was jumping around and laughing with the crowd by the second song. I love that man so very much.

Rumors of my death are only slightly exaggerated.

hahahaa oh my god clare, i kid you not, over half the audience was wearing those glasses.

I think the worst concert I've ever been to was a Copeland concert. It's definitely not dancing music, and I guess I shouldn't have expected a lot of energy from the crowd, but like, they just sort of politely clapped after each song. It sucked, because at the time I was a huge fan (I'm still a fan, definitely), so the audience definitely plays a role in how a concert goes (which really I guess goes without saying).

The best concert I've been to was the Aquabats at Orlando, I forget the venue exactly. It was awesome though, because everyone was so nice! It wasn't like a ska punk crowd, who can get a little rough in the pit. Everyone was really polite, but never to the point of being boring. They were just, they were conscious of their surroundings, and knew how to control themselves and not punch out other audience members.

And it was the Aquabats I mean come on.

they call him…the universe crimbus

I'm seeing the Aquabats at Coachella this year. Could not be more excited. I bought "The Fury" and "vs. The Floating Eye Of Death" in preparation.
To be honest, I don't find their studio endeavors to be all that fantastic, but I've heard their live show cannot be missed.

I've seen ska live. With fast-paced music like that, I can't imagine it being that hard to get the crowd pumped

Been a while since I posted here. Got some fun things to say though…

My new band, Highwind, is playing our first show next Friday with these guys: http://www.myspace.com/columboid
It's a band that has members from Man Man, Vaz, Lewis & Clarke, and Icy Demons. Especially excited about the Man Man part of that, though I can't figure out WHO from Man Man is in Columboid
Also part of that show is Loto Ball Show, a band with a frontman who was apparently praised by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, so that's pretty cool!

More things… uh… the new Strokes album is really good. Haters gonna hate. I love it a lot. More than First Impressions Of Earth at least…

and i'm frozen with joy right where i stand

oh man, whadup slopez

I just bought Angles myself. Did your copy have NO id tags for any of the songs? /frustration

Still, I'm finding love in Machu Picchu, Under Cover of Darkness, and a bunch of tracks that I haven't bothered looking at the name of. They're gonna blow the sand off of Coachella this year, I can feel it~

Rumors of my death are only slightly exaggerated.

Yeah, Ffish... don't do anymore modding on your iPhone or whatever. I had to cover your ass this time...

Angles is awesome. It's a little strange that UCoD is the only song that sounds like a Triumphant Strokes Comeback Single, but I've never disliked an album for sounding a lot like The Cars and I'm not about to start with this one.

My favorites right now are UCoD, Life Is Simple in The Moonlight (that guitar solo is one of their best), Machu Picchu, and Two Kinds of Happiness. The only one that doesn't work for me is Metabolism, which sounds like a bad FIoE outtake.

~ just one man's opinion ~

To be quite honest, I only listened to Is This It for the first time maybe a month ago, so when time I listen to The Strokes I get the impression of 80's revival rock. I mean, it's good eighties revival rock, but I still don't see why people revere Julian Casablancas as if he were the second coming of Thom Yorke (another cult of personality I don't fully understand)

Twitter | Steam | Tumblr | Flickr
there is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and dark of night
and if you go, no one can follow. That path is for your steps alone

I think the great-things-on-the-horizon stuff comes from how different they were from major-label rock circa 2001. (Also the enormous hype engine they had in 2001 as The Band That Would Save Rock.) (Also also Julian Casablancas is apparently dreamy! and mysterious!! for somebody who never washes his hair.)

I'm pretty new to them myself, and Room On Fire is actually my favorite of their albums, so I'm the wrong person to comment on it, I guess. But I've never wanted or needed a lot of lyrical depth in music, so I like the melodies, the guitar interplay, and the goofy faux-drum-machine beats, and I deal with Casblancas's vague, grasping lyrics.

I wouldn't call them 80s-rock-revival so much as rock revival—I'm not a big Mark Prindle fan, but he made a good point in his Is This It review to the effect that you can draw a line from the Strokes through bands like the Cars all the way back to the first anonymous band who thought, post-Beatles, "Rock is too wordy and jammy now! let's write some three-minute guitar-drums-bass songs about how awesome we are." (And then, inevitably, released their own wordy, jammy album a few years later.)

~ just one man's opinion ~

The only album I have is Is This It, so I might not be as qualified to judge, but they strike me as harkening more to Buddy Holly or Jerry Lee than 80s rock. What sort of bands are you comparing to, anyway? Cars or maybe Smiths' poppier singles I can kind of see, but I still stand by the rock & roll comparison.

Rumors of my death are only slightly exaggerated.
